frequently asked questions

FAQ

DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST?

You do not need a doctor’s referral to see a psychologist.  If you are eligible to claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation you need to see a doctor so that the appropriate Medicare paperwork (referred to as a ‘Mental Health Care Plan’ can be completed and forwarded to us.

CAN I GET A REBATE FOR MY SESSIONS?

Note that a mental health care place entitles you to a rebate  which covers approximately half of the session fee.  If you have private health insurance then you may be entitled to a rebate. Each fund is different so it is worth checking with your fund to see what your entitlements are.

ARE YOU OPEN ON WEEKENDS OR EVENINGS?

Yes but these appointments are subject to availability.

IS THERE PARKING ON SITE?

Yes, we have plenty of free parking.

HOW SOON CAN I GET AN APPOINTMENT?

We will endeavour to book you in as soon as possible.

HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST?

Initial sessions are 75 minutes. Subsequent sessions are 60 minutes in duration.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Generally, counselling  involves a few weeks of relatively intensive treatment (generally 1 session per week), followed by as many  sessions as you and your psychologist feel is appropriate (usually fortnightly or monthly).

IS IT NORMAL TO FEEL ANXIOUS ABOUT SEEING A PSYCHOLOGIST FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Yes, it is common for people to experience some initial nervousness.  We are aware of this and we strive to provide a warm and understanding environment to help you feel more comfortable.

CAN I BRING A SUPPORT PERSON?

Sure! Your family member or friend is free to come into the session with you or to sit in our waiting room where our staff will look after them and make them tea or coffee.

WHAT TYPES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENT STRATEGIES  ARE USED?

Psychologists draw from a wide range of evidence-based treatment modalities.  Some of these include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Schema Focused Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy.
